Launching: Crypto AML Leaderboards

February 12, 2024

We are excited to announce the launch of our AML Leaderboards for Exchanges and DEXs.

Transparency, disclosure, and data are more important than ever in the crypto ecosystem, and this is one of several steps we are taking to provide participants with the tools and insights to evaluate risk and reputation where it matters.

What Is Leaderboards?

Leaderboards profiles, scores, and ranks Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) across 23 AML variables.  It is underpinned by a proprietary risk scoring index, which showcases how well services are responding to and dealing with financial crime risks in the cryptocurrency sector.

Leaderboards data changes in real-time.  Think of it like a league table, with participants moving up and down based on new AML information: a financial penalty will result in a lower score while a new license might improve an entity’s score… in much the same way as a sports team does when it wins or loses!

Building the data in this way allows you to stay up to date with events in the ecosystem, find out how issues are impacting key players, and assess how constituents are responding to risk and regulatory change in a fast-moving market.

What Is Available?

Available on our site are the Top 10 entities in our Exchange & Decentralised Exchange rankings.

In total, however, Hoptrail profiles, scores and ranks almost 700 VASPs on its platform, from exchanges and custody services to NFT marketplaces, gambling services, prime brokers, and beyond.  We have plans to release more data in the future, so stay tuned.

Why Did We Build Leaderboards?

When we started Hoptrail, we understood that there were sections of the corporate world that were interested in getting involved in crypto but were nervous about doing so.

That nervousness came from a feeling that crypto was complicated, data heavy, and fraught with risk.  Businesses could see the opportunity but were reluctant to engage through fear of misinterpreting risks, failing to grasp the tools, or being overwhelmed by information and jargon.

We set out to change that.

Crypto has come a long way.  But in some areas, it has advanced to the point of shutting out non-native participants.  And so, from the outset, our goal was to build a service that connected traditional business to the crypto ecosystem in a secure, compliant, and understandable way.

Getting traditional business comfortable with crypto as a first step was essential, and the path to that goal was education: providing risk insights on the sector as a whole, mapping out its key players, enabling simple but robust AML and source of funds checks on entities and wallets, and connecting all of those things into a complete, holistic service.

In short, it was about providing a platform that was both intuitive and familiar, drawing on many of the due diligence techniques our clients are used to.

The natural first step was to build risk data sets on the key players in the ecosystem, drawing on public and non-public information.  That work has evolved to become Leaderboards.

Leaderboards is the foundation on which we plan to build the sector’s most comprehensive analytics tool, combining off-chain and on-chain intelligence for deeper and better risk insights.
